Insurance Claims Handler

Salary: Band I (£32,628 to £36,372)
Contract: Permanent

This role provides a unique opportunity to apply your claims handling skills in a small in-house insurance claims department of the London Borough of Barnet.

If you have a detailed working knowledge of the Civil Procedure Rules, legislation relevant to a public body and can demonstrate an ability to negotiate claims across multiple classes including third party public liability personal injury claims, motor vehicle and material damage claims, the London Borough of Barnet want to hear from you.

In return you will have a delegated authority to negotiate settlements with claimants direct, solicitors, insurers and loss adjusters and you will be required to attend court with our legal representatives and witnesses in defended litigated cases.

By joining the Council you will contribute to the overall strategy to minimise the total cost of insurance, supporting risk management projects and working directly with Council services to help identify areas and processes which can be improved to reduce future claims and minimise costs.

To support you in your claims handling you will have access to a modern workflow driven local authority claims handling system and will therefore be expected to be proficient in the use of IT, including Microsoft Word and Excel where you will support wider risk management and reporting requirements of the team.

Insurance Officer (Temporary)

Salary: Pro Rata £32,486 to £36,379 per annum

If you enjoy working independently, solving problems dynamically and providing a high level of consistent customer service, you may want to consider this temporary role within the diverse Exchequer Services team.

From identifying risks and arranging insurance solutions, to investigating claims and recovering uninsured losses, you will be responsible for fulfilling all the Council’s insurance needs.  This will include protecting the Authority’s assets by maintaining the property and motor insurance portfolio, liaising with the Council’s insurers to recover insured losses, and assisting them in the investigation of any liability claims made against the Council.  You will also engage in risk management exercises, and arrange interdepartmental meetings to get a wider view of insurance requirements.

Applicants will need to have knowledge and understanding of insurance principles and experience of local authority risks would be greatly beneficial.  You will need to have good verbal and written communication skills and exhibit diplomacy in dealing with external customers.  Adeptness at dealing with various systems as well as good Microsoft Office skills will be essential for producing detailed reports.

You will be based at the Civic Offices in Basingstoke near the top of town, a very short walk from Festival Place shopping centre providing plentiful lunchtime shopping and dining choices. The role will involve some travel to external meetings and information gathering site visits are encouraged, where appropriate.
