Education & Training with ALARM
Education and training has always been a
fundamental part of ALARM - from its early days as a member
organisation to its current role as the leading authority on public
sector risk management.
Education and training takes many forms and
ALARM’s challenge is to provide opportunities and products that
meet the increasingly diverse nature of the organisation’s current
and future membership. The diversity in terms of types of member
organisations, different professions represented and sectoral
influences mean that our training delivery needs to be flexible and
dynamic if it is to satisfy widespread demand for leading edge
training and advice.
Education and Training falls into 3 broad
areas:
- ALARM’s own conference and seminar programme;
- Support and recognition of Continuous Professional Development
(CPD);
- Working with partners to develop and support quality education
sessions and products to assist the membership.
ALARM’s own conference and seminar
programme
ALARM Conference, a national event held
annually, is the biggest European Public Sector Risk Management
Conference, attracting international visitors, as well as a
significant number of “repeat” members who hold this event in high
esteem. Each year, the conference format is refined, reviewed and
revitalised in direct response to members’ input and evaluations on
topics, speakers and content.
The education content covers sector specific
interests, general operational risk management topics and strategic
issues, debates and workshops. The softer skills are also
considered to ensure our members take away pointers and knowledge
that will help them deliver the key messages back at their
employing organisatons.
ALARM has a thriving regional framework of
education activity, with nine Regional/Country groups providing
bespoke risk seminars and conferences to meet their members’ needs.
Many members attend these sessions on a regular basis and the
quality and significance of this activity continues to expand.
Recently sector and topic specific sessions
have been developed to support the Police and Fire Services and the
Management of Fraud Risk. The success of these events will be
used as a model for further specific events.
Support and recognition of Continuous
Professional Development (CPD)
This topic has always been important to ALARM
- the professionalism of its membership is a matter of great pride.
In 2005, ALARM introduced the Registered
Risk Practitioner scheme as the recognised CPD process
for Risk Practitioners, specific to the industry professionals.
Once achieved, the RRP status can be reapplied
for year on year demonstrating an individual’s commitment to their
profession, knowledge and expertise.
We intend to award RRP points to other high
calibre risk management events to ensure our membership can go to
the broadest range of events in support of their
professionalism.
Working with Partners to develop and
support quality risk management to Education and
Training
ALARM has a long history of working with the
Institute of Risk Management (IRM) in developing and supporting
their qualifications and products. However, in recent times we have
expanded this role, having purchased the licence for “Managing Risk
in the Public Sector” course and developing it into a unique course
with the approval and support of the IRM and the Institute of
Occupational Health and Safety.
This course has been successfully delivered to
some 400 delegates and is currently undergoing a significant
review in terms of content, relevance and delivery.
