Alarm Scotland Conference
2010
Stirling Management Centre,
14th - 16th November 2010
Welcoming delegates to the 2010 Alarm Scotland
Conference against the toughest financial background that many
members have experienced, Alarm Scotland Chairman Graeme Mackenzie
outlined his belief that “risk managers have a tremendous
opportunity before us that must be seized”. Graeme is convinced
that the discipline of risk management, with its core aims of
identification, evaluation and elimination or control of needless
loss has an opportunity to really “come of age”.
The event included keynote addresses and
workshops from both sector specialists and public sector
practitioners. For example, Cliff Warman from Marsh gave a keynote
speech covering the topic of “Insurance Implications of Climate
Change” in which he reviewed the evidence of a changing climate,
what the risk issues emanating from this change are, what it means
for the UK and the perception of climate related risks. Cliff also
looked at what the insurance industry is doing in terms of raising
awareness of climate change related risk issues, and the role of
insurance in operational “climate proofing” activities.
Another topical session was delivered by
Ginette Evans from Gallagher Basset and focused on “Event Risk
Management”. Looking at the barriers to running events, including
insurance and health & safety, Ginette reviewed the relevant
legislation and responsibilities for all parties – such as the
venue / site owner, event organiser, contractors and sub
contractors. Ginette then went on to demonstrate how planning,
managing and effective risk assessment, all contribute to running a
successful event.
