Are you MAD?
Hooks, clubs, towel rails
and donkey buttons (don’t ask!), are not the kind of things you
would expect to be discussing at an Alarm Police Group Day.
As Rachelle Banham of the
Hertfordshire Constabulary explained, the Alarm Police Group hosted
a one day seminar on ‘The Image of Risk Management’ at the Forest
of Arden Marriott Hotel and Country Club on 13th April 2010. The
main sessions were led by Diane Ingham–Cook from Effective Training
and Development and can be downloaded from the Police Events
page.
During the morning
session, Diane used metaphors to demonstrate different methods and
techniques that could be used when making presentations to people,
particularly when trying to get buy-in around risk management. It
was clear from the delegates, that the areas people struggled with
when presenting were from nerves, lack of confidence, or the
difficulties of trying to sell a subject that to most appears
bureaucratic and ‘not their job’.
The methods and
techniques that were illustrated would enable a presenter to
engage his or her audience while outlining the positive
benefits of undertaking risk management and the negative
consequences of not, and sway their audience into taking action
proactively instead of the most common, reactive approach.
The afternoon session
focused on influence and delegation. Risk management incorporates
both of these elements. Risk managers are fully aware that they
need to influence in order to ‘sell’ risk management, but also
delegate responsibility in the management and control of risks. The
group looked at different ways that people generally try to get
others to accept their thoughts and ideas or take action.
Diane provided the skills
and tools to empower the group to relate to different audiences and
deliver their message.
A lot of Alarm seminars
are free and if you have the opportunity – even if you haven’t
attended before or for a long time – you should go. Remember, these
sessions are tailored to public sector working and are designed for
the benefit of members.
Lastly, ask yourself a
question…Are you MAD and if so, in which direction? You should be…

Police Group “The future of
Risk Management in the Police Service”
When the Police Group met on
19th October to discuss “The future of Risk Management
in the Police Service” we didn’t appreciate what a rich vein of
thought we would be tapping into. It was clear that we could have
discussed the subject for a lot longer than we did. As it was the
30 people who were able to join us for the day found real benefit
in the discussions. Despite taking the opportunity to widen the
debate on the day it is likely that even those who attended will
want to contribute something more, while those of you who couldn’t
make it really need to have the opportunity to contribute.
The findings of the day may help both the
Police Group and the wider body of Alarm to consider the future of
risk management in this new age of austerity and help them to
position themselves to address the challenges that lay ahead for
both members and the public sector generally.
To that end I would encourage you to consider
the 10 questions, together with the bulleted responses that arose
from the 19th October meeting. They are all shown on the
attached document. I would welcome your views, irrespective of
whether you joined us on the day and want to add something more, or
whether you wish to take the opportunity to add something new
because you couldn’t join us.
Our colleague, Jackie Orchard, is working on a
piece for a future edition of Public RM, and because we think it
would be useful to publish things as close together as possible I
would like to receive your views and feedback no later than
11/11/10. I appreciate that this is a tight timescale but I think
the opportunities of producing two linked pieces of work such as
this are too good to miss.
You can find the raw data here.
Please send your responses or views to
timothy.burton@devonandcornwall.pnn.police.uk
Can I therefore thank you in anticipation of
you sharing your views with as soon as possible.

Alarm Survey
2009
In the Autumn of 2009 the Alarm Police Group
Committee sanctioned a survey of its members. The survey was
designed to try and help the Committee gain an insight into members
views, concern, worries and thoughts. We were very grateful that 50
people took the opportunity to respond. This was significantly
above the normal attendance at our meetings and consequently
provided us with a great deal of information that we wouldn’t have
otherwise had access to. We are therefore extremely grateful to
everybody who took the time to take part.
In some ways the response echoed the
committee’s own feelings as members. In other ways it provided us
with some reassurance that we are heading in the right direction
and finally it provided us with some challenges to look at how we
do things in the future. As a national group we are always going to
be constrained by distance as well as the costs to members of
getting to venues and we appreciate this. Similarly as the scope of
Risk Management as a subject continues to grow we have to represent
a wide range of practitioners with a variety of background skills.
Our biggest challenge therefore is trying to reconcile the timing
of meetings to their location, to their frequency and to the
relevance of the topic that may be presented. As the committee
members continue to wrestle with these conundrums we are always
grateful for your thoughts and views, especially when it comes to
topics for meetings, ideas for guest speakers and locations
etc.
Please take a few minutes to look at the
outcomes from the survey, especially where somebody else’s views
may have differed from your own. If you feel you can help the group
address some of the more challenging bits of the survey then please
get in touch with any one of the committee members and discuss it
with them accordingly.
